Structural integrity in underground mining.
Structural health monitoring of tunnels and walls in mining – with radar.
Monitoring the structural integrity of mines is essential for safe and productive underground mining. However, reliable and precise sensors for structural health monitoring are required to obtain reliable data on the condition of tunnels, walls or shafts. OndoSense radar sensors help prevent structural failure in mines by continuously monitoring, for example, deformations and stresses in the tunnel structure. The highly precise, reliable sensors detect even the smallest structural changes with an accuracy of up to 20 μm.
To monitor structural integrity, the radar sensor can be mounted on the tunnel wall or ceiling, for instance. This enables the radar to continuously monitor the distance to the opposite wall or the ground below. Minimal variations in the distance value can thus be measured, allowing for smallest deformations and vibrations of the tunnel or wall structure to be detected. Neither temperature or pressure fluctuations nor smoke, dust or water droplets affect the measurement. As a result, radar-based structural monitoring helps ensure safe mining operations, avoid accident-related downtime, and increase the productivity of underground mining.
