Highly accurate width and thickness measurement in the hot rolling mill

Reliably measure slabs, flat or long steel with radar sensors – in cold and hot rolling mills

OndoSense radar sensors enable highly accurate measurements of slabs, steel beams, long and flat steel, steel piles and other metal workpieces — even in difficult production environments with smoke, steam, fire or dirt. The radar sensor system is suitable for hot rolling mills, cold rolling mills or continuous casting plants and provides width measurement and thickness measurement, saber shape measurement, slab detection as well as positioning of flat or strip steel. The OndoSense radar sensor solution helps minimizing the scrap of steel, aluminum, copper and other metals, lowering production costs in the hot rolling mill and cold rolling mill, and thus reducing CO2 emissions in the metal industry.

Measuring slabs in the hot rolling mill

Challenging width and thickness measurement

Whether during metal production in the continuous casting plant or in the further processing of steel, aluminum, copper and other metals in the hot rolling mill or cold rolling mill: The highly precise and reliable geometric measurement of slabs, steel beams, rails, billets, ingots or steel slabs is a challenging task for sensor solutions due to the extreme production conditions. Adverse light conditions, steam, dust and temperatures of up to 1000 degrees Celsius make it difficult to automate the width and thickness measurement or error inspection of long and flat steel or other semi-finished metal products. This applies in particular to light-sensitive optical sensor systems such as lasers, laser scanners or camera-based systems. For the metal industry, dimension measurement and inspection of steel, aluminium or copper slabs is of great importance in order to reduce scrap, save production costs and lower CO2 emissions. This requires innovative sensor technologies that deliver reliable measurement data even under the most difficult conditions.

High precision in cold & hot rolling mills

Precise & robust radar sensor for slab measurement

OndoSense sensor solutions enable highly precise and reliable measurement results in the challenging production environments of the metal industry. Thanks to robust radar technology, the sensors measure with micrometer precision in cold rolling mills or hot rolling mill as well as in continuous casting plants even in case of water vapor, dust, smoke, fire or challenging lighting conditions. The radar sensor system thus offers decisive advantages over optical systems. For example, OndoSense radar sensor technology enables highly precise dimension measurement of copper, aluminium or steel slabs that are up to 1000 degrees hot. Through the use of several radar sensors, various geometric measurements of slabs, flat products, steel beams, rails, billets, bars, steel piles or other semi-finished metal products are possible — e. g. width measurement, thickness measurement, saber shape measurement, deflection measurement, slab detection, positioning of flat or strip steel and flatness measurement of metal workpieces. The ultra-precise OndoSense radar sensor solution thus helps lower scrap in the cold and hot rolling mill, reduce production costs and diminish CO2 emissions in the metal industry.
